Looking Back while Thinking & Planning Ahead!
Soon, most everyone else will be making their New Year's resolutions.
While we will be fine tuning our Top 10 Goals for making 2007 our best ever.
I love this time of year, it is such a wonderful time to reflect and review on the achievements and the lessons of the past year. What a great exercise and a fantastic process to go through.
It's like getting a fresh start with greater clarity than ever before.
I've always found great benefit in looking back as I think and plan ahead.
Think about what kind of year 2006 was for you and what you want 2007 to be like. What were your greatest victories and achievements last year? What were some of the setbacks you had to overcome? How have you grown...what have you learned?
Here's a few simple suggestions as you fine tune your Goals for 2007:
- Review your past 12 months. Start by looking back at your calendar and visualize everything that took place. What special events did you hold or attend? What were some of your best victories and greatest memories? Where did you travel to and what relationships have grown stronger? Pay special attention to all the fun you had with your inner circle. Also make note of any goals and/or commitments you made but maybe didn't follow through on. Try to get a big picture overview of how you've been spending your time in relation to to your priorities. Look for patterns and take note of any habits you have developed over the past year, good and bad.
- Review your stats and compare them to the past couple years. How have you improved? What do your stats tell you? Remember that they never lie...they always provide useful feedback. Where are you seeing the best ROE? Return on Energy/Effort? Remember, good or bad, the objective is to learn from them and plan to improve by at least 10% or better.
- Jot down notes of any areas you want to improve. Think it, ink it...Think ahead, plan ahead...get ahead. Looking back while thinking ahead is a valuable exercise as we prepare to make 2007 our best ever. There is no failure...only useful feedback. Learn from you setbacks as well as your victories.
- Review your goals and achievements for 2006. Take note of your biggest accomplishments as well as any setbacks. Often I refer to them as missed opportunities. If I really took my eye off the ball somewhere or see reversed growth occurring :) we will call this inspirational dissatisfaction. In other word, get pissed off enough to do something about it!
- Make a list of all the people that helped you this past year. Also jot down the people that you have helped succeed. Look for relationships that have grown and improved over the last 12 months. Also look for any that have slipped backwards.
- Keep asking yourself what are your Top 10 Goals for 2007. My advice is not to try to get into too much detail quite yet. In essence, you are brainstorming with yourself and it's a great exercise. Think ahead...Plan ahead...get ahead.
It's always a good idea to spend some time talking with friends and associates about their year's accomplishments and victories. This has a tendency to spark your own thoughts and may provide you with some great ideas.
It also tends to strengthen and deepen your relationships. When you ask great questions and listen attentively, you always learn more about that person.
Myself and my wife have practiced this exercise for many years and it has definitely helped to see that we remain on the same path and support each others growth.
Just last night, before going out to dinner with some friends, we spent about 90 minutes together reviewing the year from her perspective and discussing goals she would like to accomplish this upcoming year. It's always me preference to first talk about personal goals and then zero in on her professional objectives.
We both enjoy this process and it definitely strengthens our relationship and provides us both with greater clarity. Which has definite influence on many other people within our inner circle. It's one of those exercises that has all positive benefits and no negatives.
"You were born to win, but to be a winner, you must plan to win, prepare to win, and expect to win!" - Zig Ziglar
Plan to win....prepare to win....expect to win. I hope you'll take some time to reflect and review on the past year. While thinking and planning ahead to make 2007 your best year ever. Physically, mentally, emotionally, relationships and finances...it's all good.
Clarity gives us the power to aggressively pursue our most important goals and objectives.
Clarity motivates us to take more action and better actions.
Clarity energizes and inspires greatness.
Happy New Years!
