Lavallee's Life Lessons

If there is any doubt...there is no doubt!

One of my many objectives in helping others through the Martial Arts, is to help my students be 100% ready for promotion when they come up for testing. Especially for advanced ranks.

I have learned that the better foundation we lay at Basic Level, the more confident they are in the Intermediate Levels. The more confident and stronger they test entering into Advanced Level, the higher their interest and energy level in the final stages of Black Belt preparation.

Teaching and helping others grow and improve their lives through the Martial Arts is my true passion. Once I became more aware of that and began to better understand it, I paid closer attention to how I can help more people train longer and stay involved for a lifetime.

In the process, I am fortunate to be surrounded by many long time students & friends that are high quality Martial Artists and even higher quality people that I love spending time with.

My best long term students are people that have always been held to a very high standard.

One of my teaching philosophies has always been... If there is any doubt, there is no doubt.

Simply meaning that there should be no doubt that each student is ready for promotion to the next level. It takes just as much time and effort to produce mediocre students as it does to create excellent students. If there is any doubt, there is no doubt...they are not ready!

It's a helluva lot more fun to be surrounded by high quality students that are committed to a higher standard than to be surrounded by people that will accept mediocrity in life.

If we truly want to be World Class Instructors... we must maintain a World Class mind set toward everything we do. Being committed to raising the standard does not mean lowering the standard. I have found that you get what you accept.

As we grow bigger, I'd like to think we are capable of being better.

I understand that not all my current advanced students will be as good as the handful that I once personally trained and developed back in the old days.

The old my way or the highway days...the old if you don't like it...there's the door days.

However, we should never stop teaching and preaching the benefits of holding people to a higher standard. Think of how much better you are, because you were held accountable to meet a higher standard. Somehow, some way, someone made you step up a notch.

What's good for the goose...is good for the gander.

Master Andrello will be my first student ever promoted to the rank of 6th Degree Black Belt.

He has always been held accountable and has always held himself accountable to a level of excellence that would make any teacher proud. There is NO DOUBT that he is ready for promotion to 6th Degree and we are not under a last minute crunch to get him ready.

That's the way it should be when you are training advanced levels. Remove all doubt.

Challenge them daily to step up and always ask for more. Start weeks and months in advance to get them ready. No matter how much they think they are giving, always ask for more.

More practice time. More conditioning. More effort and energy. More protocol.

It's all good and it's all necessary to help people transform their lives through their training. Becoming a Black Belt should be a positive transformation and a drastically improved version.

There should be a big difference of the beginner that first set foot in the door and the advanced team member that is an example of our teachings.

Remember the first stage of influence is being the Model of Excellence.

You set the pace, you are the example, then your product becomes the example as well.

The second stage is motivating. To be an effective teacher, you must be able to motivate your students to want to be great. Give them the reasons why...give them a motive to take action. Motivate them to train harder and give more effort and energy.

The third stage is mentoring. Like parenting, mentoring your students in no part time job.

Are you committing yourself to being a mentor that cares and shares his or her knowledge?

Have you helped your students to the point where they look to you for mentoring and life coaching?

The final stage of influence is multiplying. What kind of quality are you multiplying?

Again, you get what you accept. What level of excellence are you willing to accept? What are you accepting in yourself? Are you setting the pace aggressively? Are you staying in top shape and training daily to improve yourself? Do you make excuses? Do you accept them?

Another long time teaching and leadership philosophy is called L-B-E-E-E.

Leadership by Example with the Energy for Excellence. It's not only the best way to lead, it's the only way, if you want to take pride in what you do and what you teach.

One more gem that was passed along by Mr. Cokinos...it's the teachers job to get the student ready. Meaning that we are responsible to our students to get them ready for their next level. Some may take a little longer and some make take a lot more effort.

In the long run, it will always be a labor of love, when you are developing Black Belts that represent you, your school and your teachings.

As we all start off the New Year, let's make a commitment to teaching high quality classes that produces high quality students. It's been my experience that quality breeds quality and quality sells.

One last thought...it takes just as much time to teach a mediocre class as it does to teach a great class. If you accept mediocrity, your life will be filled with it.

Make excellence your habit.

Best of Success!

Osu,
Kyoshi
