Are you Starting your Year with S.M.A.R.T. Goals?

Specific Measurable Attainable Realistic Time-Dated.

As part of our annual Back-to-Basics approach to making this our best year ever, we will be spending these first few weeks of the year by reviewing our Goal Setting skills.

Most people avoid setting goals simply because they have never learned how.

Others simply fear failure and then there are those that just procrastinate and simply never take enough action.

In the Martial Arts, we learn very early about the value of goal setting.

Goals we Set...are Goals we Get. We learn this from the very first intro class and then we learn that any goal that is properly set, is halfway met.

A simple starting point is to apply the S.M.A.R.T. method of setting goals.

Learning to set goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, realistic and time dated.

Here are just a couple examples:

"I will earn my 1st Degree Black Belt by December of 2007!"

"I will increase my income by 20% by the end of this year."

"I will lose one pound per week for a total of 20 pounds by June 1st."

Of course, any goal you set would need to fit you and your present situation.

The more specific the better. Instead of a new car, you would want to know the exact car, color and year of the car you want. Instead of just losing weight, you want to know the exact weight you desire to be.

Make it measurable by knowing where you are at right now, and where you want to be.

If you are aiming to save money, you would want to know how much you have right now and how much you want to have by the end of 2007.

Make it attainable and realistic by raising the bar at levels that you truly believe you can achieve. If you believe it is possible, you are more likely to go for it than if you don't really believe you can do it.

Finally, is to give yourself a time frame to work within. We all tend to work best with a deadline. It creates a positive pressure that drives us to take action now -vs- later.

In the beginning stages of Goal-Setting, it's best to allow yourself some flexibility in your target dates, we call this rigid flexibility. Just in case you encounter obstacles that may require more time than you originally planned.

Becoming a Goal-Oriented person is one of the keys to hi-performance living. It's always more exciting if the goal is based on something you really want and that you truly believe you can accomplish.

If you start your year by setting S.M.A.R.T. goals in the key areas that will have the greatest impact and influence on your health, wealth and happiness...you will be setting yourself up for success all year long.

You will be giving yourself that edge that can put you in the Top 5% of Peak Performers in the Martial Arts, in business and in life. Be one of those that succeed because you know where you are going and what you want.

Goals give direction to our dreams. Most kids find it very easy to dream, too many adults become cynical and stop dreaming. This is such a shame, because you are never really to old to dream of things you want to have, do or become.

This is why we encourage you to start your Goal Setting for the New Year by drafting up your Master Wishlist/Dream List for the next 3-5 years. VISION 2010 and beyond.

Then you write down your Top 10 Goals for 2007. Your dreams become Goals the moment you take action to make them happen. A goal is merely a dream with a deadline.

Would you like this to be your best year for fitness and your Martial Arts skills?

How about making this your best year ever for financial growth and gain?

Wouldn't you like to see this be your best year ever for relationships?

Steven Covey says: If you want to predict the future, you must create it!

I've attached a copy of our Master Wishlist and Top 10 Goals to this article.

Good Luck and Happy Goal Setting!

Speaking of starting the year with S.M.A.R.T. Goals. Master Jim Andrello will be leading our Syracuse Team to Victory in our upcoming Black Belt Spectacular on January 27th.

Master Andrello will be our first ever 6th Degree. (Besides myself:) Sensei Ty Hafner will also be testing for 5th Degree Black Belt along with nearly 70 other students testing for 1st through 4th Degree Black belt....it's going to be awesome!

If you would like to send him your best wishes or express your gratitude for his endless energy and contribution to our organization. His e-mail address is: jandrello@aol.com

What an honor it is for me, as his Kyoshi, to see the product of a 27 year relationship that has been such an extremely rewarding and positive journey. His wife, KO is such a dynamic 5th Degree and also our Model of Excellence for Get Fit...Stay Fit Campaign.

Together, they have four beautiful children and their son Damario will be testing for his 1st Degree Black Belt along side with his Dad...cool stuff.

Another great example of....Families that Kick Together - Stick Together!

Let's team up to make it another great week...

Osu,
Kyoshi
