Hayward Nishioka began his Judo training in 1956, with his father as his first instructor. During the 1960's, Hayward Nishioka was United States Division Judo Champion three times, in 1965, 1966, and 1970. In 1970, he retired as the National AAU Grand Champion. A member of four United States international teams, he won a gold medal in the Pan-American Games in 1967. Nishioka was also the British-Colombian Champion in 1966, and places fifth in the World Judo Championships in 1965 and 1967. After retiring from competition, he became a physical education instructor at Los Angeles City College in California, heading its martial arts program. Sensei Nishioka has been a driving force in the martial arts for five decades and is widely recognized as one of the best Judo masters ever to bow onto a mat.

This video examines the qualities and the frame of mind of the few individuals that we call champions. To do this we have selected a different format-one that we think can help the competitors, parents, and coaches alike. Rather than a step-by-step how-to video, this presentation conceptualizes and names some of those ideas that we previously had about judo but never quite expressly identified. But now here they are in your edition of Star Power Judo. After viewing this tape, parents should have a better ideal of what they want to support in their children's training. Coaches will have to turn their direction to different drills and training methods needed to build their future champions. This presentation shows numerous video samples of international and Olympic championships. Many of the clips are replayed in slow motion and eloquently explained by Mr. Hayward Nishioka. Includes the first part of a special section on "What's the Score?" (How and Why the referees make their calls).
