Self-Defense & Assault Prevention for Girls & Women can be used as a physical education textbook, in women's studies and assertion training, for young adult guidance and for home study. The physical actions are based on ancient jujitsu, but are adapted to the reality of modern life. The authors do not view self-defense as preparation to become a skilled fighter. Their aim is to teach attitudes and skills to cope with and minimize the possibility of assault. This self-defense is appropriate for health and safety education as an aspect of autonomy, self-respect ad self-reliance.

BRUCE TEGNER is regarded as this country's foremost authority, teacher and innovator in the field of weaponless fighting skills. For a vocation in which most individuals practice a singe specialty, his background was unusual. From the time he was eight years old he was taught many forms of the martial arts by Asian and European experts. At twenty-one, after becoming California state judo champion, he gave up competition to devote himself to teaching, teacher training and course development. He pioneered adaptations of traditional forms for modern sport, recreation and fitness, and practical self-defense. Bruce Tegner books are used by individuals, in schools and clubs and law enforcement agencies.

ALICE McGRATH was taught by and taught with Bruce Tegner at his school in Hollywood. Together they developed a course of self-defense for girls and women which Miss McGrath introduced at the California State Physical Education Workshop for teachers at the secondary school level. This was the first practical self-defense course to be offered in physical education classes.

BRUCE TEGNER & ALICE McGRATH devised innovative teaching methods appropriate to the objective of modern education. They conducted numerous workshops, lecture/demonstrations and in-service professional development programs. Tegner and McGrath were awarded California State Community College teaching credentials for eminence in their field.
