Bruce Tegner was born in Chicago, Illinois in 1929. Both his parents were professional teachers of judo and jujitsu; they began his formal instruction in the martial arts when Bruce was two years old!
In a field where most individuals concentrate on a narrow specialty, Bruce Tegner's experience was unusual. His education covered many aspects of weaponless fighting of many styles, as well as a sword and stick techniques.
At the age of twenty-one, after become the California state judo champion, he gave up competition to devote himself to research course development, teaching and teacher training.
In the U.S. armed forces Mr. Tegner trained instructors to teach unarmed combat; he taught military police tactics; he coached sport judo teams.
From 1952 through 1967 he operated his own school in Hollywood, California where he taught men, women and children, exceptionally gifted students, and blind and disabled persons. He trained actors and choreographed fight scenes for movies and television. He devised special teaching methods and courses, some of which have been adopted by physical education departments and law enforcement training centers throughout the world.
Bruce Tegner books range from basic, practical self-defense to exotic forms of fighting for experts and enthusiasts. Editions of Tegner books have been published in German, Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, and French.
