Thomas H. Makiyama is the only American native holding the eighth dan in aikido and a shihan (master-teacher) certification. He is the well-known author of the first English volume on aikido published in the 1950's and another volume in 1983 with Ohara Publications Inc., introducing his unique keijutsukai aikido system.
